Garage Door Opener Repair Omaha

Project Description

A homeowner in Omaha, NE, called us when they thought their old garage door opener broke. While on the phone, they said they had had difficulty opening their garage door the past few days. They often heard the opener making a loud grinding noise. The day they called, the door stopped opening about two feet above the floor. We sent our technician to check what was causing the issue. When we tried to open the garage door, the trolley carriage moved, but the door did not open. Upon closer inspection of the opener system, our technician discovered that the trolley carriage had stripped, leading to its breakage. Our diagnosis—it was defective and needed replacement. As we came prepared, we had a compatible trolley carriage with us. Our technicians replaced the trolley carriage and got the garage door working fine later. Another positive response for our garage door opener repair  job by the end of the day!

The trolley on your garage door is vital to the door’s operation. It facilitates the movement of your hefty garage door for smooth opening and closing. However, it will wear out over time and need to be replaced. So unless you want to stare at a broken trolley one day, it is worth investing in a high-quality trolley designed to last.

What Is a Trolley Carriage?

The trolley is the rail that connects the garage door to the opener. It sits at the center of the garage door header on one end and runs to the opener’s motor unit. The trolley carriage rides on the rail and operates the garage door with a belt, chain, or cable.

The trolley carriage is an important moving part of the garage door, along with the door’s torsion springs. On overhead garage doors, the trolley carriage is where the emergency release is located. You can manually open and close the door via a rope hanging from it.

How Do You Know if Your Trolley Carriage Is Broken?

Is your garage door stuck and not opening, even when the trolley carriage moves? That is a clear sign that your trolley carriage is broken. Replacing the trolley carriage is a simple process that anyone can do in less than 30 minutes. In fact, you can do this task using basic household tools like pliers, a new trolley, and a ladder. Plus, since the door is already down, there is no risk of the chain or cable slipping. So let us describe how easy and simple it is to repair a broken garage door trolley by following the steps below.

Removing the Old Trolley Carriage

First, disconnect the motor from its power source. You will need to unplug it from the wall outlet. Likewise, turn off the switch in the fuse box for openers plugged into a power outlet.

Next, locate the release cord that connects the garage door to the trolley assembly. Manually close the door so that the trolley is at the far end of its rail.

Afterward, position a ladder underneath the trolley. Remove the cotter pin connecting the trolley with a pair of pliers. Swivel the arm down until it is even with the side of the door.

Undo the bolt connecting the outer end of the rail to the wall bracket. Lift the rail so there is enough room to clear the carriage off the end of the rail.

Replacing the Carriage

First, detach the old one from the rail to replace the carriage. Be sure to disconnect the release cord at the underside and then push the carriage towards the rail. Next, fit the new replacement carriage onto the rail. The release cord should be at the inner end of the motor.

Once the new carriage is in place, reattach the rail to the wall bracket with the bolt and nut you started with. Swivel the arm back to reattach it to the carriage. Replace the cotter pin.
