Why Your Garage Door Won’t Close and How to Fix It

One of the most significant features of your home is the garage door. The smooth operation and safety it provides are critical for your household and vehicles. Unfortunately, among the most typical garage door problems is a door that will not close. However, if your door is not shutting properly, the good news is that you may be able to fix the problem yourself. This article lays out valuable tips for diagnosing the issues with your door. Read on to learn how to fix the problem before it becomes too much of a headache.

Why Your Garage Door Won’t Close and How to Fix It

Check for faulty safety sensors

If your door refuses to close, the problem could be with the safety sensor. These sensors will prompt the opener to reverse the door’s direction or stop it in place if they detect obstructions in the door’s path. Incidentally, safety sensors often get dirty, leading to the opener’s control board receiving false signals. Wiping them clean with a soft cloth should solve the problem. Also, if the sensors’ lights are blinking, they may be out of alignment. Loosen one of the sensors, tweak it until the lights turn solid, then tighten it.

Check the tracks and rollers for any obstructions

If the sensors are fine, but the door still refuses to close past a certain point, check the tracks for any obstacles. Inspect both tracks for any bent or signs of wear and tear. You can use clamps or properly placed hammer hits to put the bent parts back into place. While at it, check the rollers and lubricate them with white lithium or silicone-based lubricant. The door opener may sense that the door is hitting something if the rollers are jamming in the tracks.

Adjust the garage door opener limit switch setting

The limit switch is the component on the garage door opener that restricts or controls how far a door can go while opening or closing. It stops the door when it reaches its completely opened or closed position and tells the opener to turn off once the door has fully opened or closed. If your door does not close, the limit screws might need adjustments. With the opener on, use a screwdriver to turn the down limit switch that controls the door’s closing.

Get the trolley out of the bypass mode

The trolley is the small metal rod connecting the door to the opener (the part with a rope hanging from it). The door will not close if the trolley is in bypass mode. Pull on the rope hanging from the trolley toward the door to get it out of the bypass mode. Your door should work as intended with your opener.

Check the opener logic board for failure

The logic boards in openers are the brains of the system. They have complete control over your garage door, including opening and closing. Electrical surges, power outages, water damage, and physical damage to the opener are the most common causes of why the logic board fails. If your logic board is broken or damaged, you must replace it before resolving the problem.
